Defense budget addition suspended
Knesset's Finance Committee decides to put NIS 500 million addition on hold pending new vote; cites defense establishment's 'failure to meet several objectives' as reason
The Knesset's Finance Committee decided Tuesday to suspend the Defense Ministry's request for a NIS 500 million (approx. $131.44 million) addition for the defense establishment's budget.
The additional funds were approved by the committee, but funneling has been suspended after three committee members demanded a new vote on the matter, saying the defense establishment failed to meet several key objectives.
Knesset Member Uri Ariel (National Union) demanded the matter be put to a new vote over the defense establishment's failure to form a special committee on compensatory payments for settlers who will suffer damages over of the government's decision to freeze settlement construction.
Finance Committee Chairman Moshe Gafni (United Torah Judaism) said another vote is due over the defense establishment's failure to allocate NIS 300 million (about $79 million) for environmental protection, as decided by the IDF chief's financial advisor.
MK Zeev Elkin (Likud) supports a new vote over the security establishment's decision to cut NIS 30 million (about $7.9 million) from the hesder yeshivot's budget; a decision was made prior to the latest conflict between the seminary schools and the military.
