I don't think he heard much past "mother" and "Christian" before he made it clear that I am not a Jew, never will be a Jew and that I'd just have to find God some other way. I was physically and emotionally stunned. When I related the situation to some Jewish friends it only got worse. I, supposedly, had spoken to the rabbi of some super-ultra-orthodox and questionable branch of Judaism, the members of which are only two steps from declaring Moses a heretic. Now, all sorts of different kinds of Judaism came out of the woodwork, and I should go to talk to this rabbi, because... or to this other rabbi, because something else, etc. By the time I was completely confused, I decided that the first rabbi had the best answer, and that I did, indeed, need to find God my own way. So, that's where I am. With my luck, I'd pick the wrong Judaism, learn the meaning of all 613 commandments and end up having somebody tell me years from now that, well, your #12 was a confused mess, #21 was the talk of the neighborhood, you never did cut out #82 with that weird family of yours, you can't tell the sound of a shofar from that of a trombone, and you, dear convert, are out of here, if you were ever even in. Exaggeration? Maybe yes; maybe no. Considering my age, I might not live long enough to recoup from that disaster, and I have decided to put my trust in God's mercy and understanding rather than take chances with the rulings of one rabbi or the other. Since, by her own admission and in contrast to my siblings, I've always been much more my father's daughter than I ever was my mother's, I would have been a good one; maybe a little on the firebrand side, but a good one, nevertheless. If I understand it correctly, even today, the role of women in orthodox Judaism is somewhat secondary to that of men, and yet, now, the women hold the key to being Jewish. I don't know if Ruth belonged to one of the tribes or if she was "new" in the class.But ,what I know is that a Convert has to fullfill more Mitzvot than Jews,or at least fulfill all of them,because they ,suposedly,were not there in the Sinai,didn't listen,so don't have the Laws naturally internalized as born Jews have.
