Erekat: PA may declare state via UN    Ynet
1. Another Joke ?
The PA wants the Security Council of the UN to come up with a resolution declaring the establishment of a Palestinian State within the 1967 borders ? What if the United States used its veto power ? How could the PA remove the flourishing Israeli settlements in the West Bank? Would the PA be able to challenge the IDF in the West Bank and Jerusalem ? Am I dumb enough not to understand the PA's move or rather is the PA trying once more to play a tasteless and ill-fated game ?
Abdel Karim Salim ,   Jerusalem - ISRAEL   (11.14.09)
2. Arab state in Palestine
"settlements and other unilateral actions are null" - as well as unilateral declaration of state? strike peace and declare state declare state and strike peace declare state and continue war strike peace and continue war or just continue war Same options as 60 years ago. Curious Israelis are waiting again, with goodwill, hope and lot of heavy hardware, - ready to meet any aspriations of Palestinians.
Alex ,   UK   (11.14.09)
3. PA is saying terrorism failed
After 16 years of PA terrorism, they are now admitting we cant defeat Israel by blowing up buses, disco's and hotels. Next the PA will demand that Israel let in 5 million Arabs. The PA is dreaming. No to Jerusalem become part of any Arab country. No to Jews leaving Judea and Samaria. If thats the case, all the Arabs in Israel would have to leave.
Steve Meyer   (11.14.09)
4. Today's United Nations
is scarcely the United Nations of sixty-two years ago. It has none of the legitimacy, and a ratpack rabble of supposedly "unaligned" nations that are actually quite aligned. Israel does have the option of unilaterally withdrawing from the United Nations, at which point any United Nations resolution will have no impact upon Israel. Frankly, this just might be the best thing Israel could do. The United Nations is a joke and a waste of time and money.

6. UN Security Council Resolution 242 has been the governing of
and the basis for all peace talks and agreements so far. There is simply no reason why it should not be implemented, as is, unless of course the intention is to implement the strategic goal of the Arabs of annihilating the Jewish state of Israel by stages and what is proposed is simply one of those baby-step stages.
Eitan ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (11.14.09)
7. Excellent Idea.
by doing so, you actually determine that all the jews that live in the 67 borders are in fact your own citizens, so you can't call for them to be removed from there. I love the Palestinians tactics of shooting themselves in the foot.

12. To: Eitan at No. 6
Eitan, Yasser Arafat (may his name be cursed through all eternity) NEVER stepped back from his frequent statement that the goal of the Palestinians to eradicate the State of Israel, and that any softening of that position is only in order to enhance the speed with which the Palestinians will achieve their ultimate goal. That would certainly explain why none of the thirty or so Palestinian organizations have repudiated their charters, which call for the destruction of the State of Israel and, depending on how radical the individual organization, either for the extermination of the Jewish people or the expulsion of the Jewish people. They have never wanted -- or even pretended to want -- two states co-existing side by side. They want the whole thing. Fairly obvious, actually -- they turned down three offers of a two-state solution, have been the impetus for six wars and have engaged in terror on an unparalleled scale for sixty-one years. However, an alternative possibility would be to dismantle the existing monarchy in Jordan and that will be the Palestinian state. Jordan is a fiction carved out of Mandatory Palestine in order to appease Feisal of Iraq's younger brother Abdullah (he wanted to be a king, too, and the British gave him something called "Kingdom of the Transjordan." Makes a great deal of sense, actually, in light of the fact that 75% of Jordan's population is "Palestinian." Whatever works. I do know this: if the region ends up having one state, that state will be Israel, it will include Judea, Samaria and the Golan and, if Hamas doesn't get real smart real soon, Gaza as well, and the terrorist lackeys of rejectionist states will have to go elsewhere. On the bright side -- there are 22 states for them to choose from.
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.14.09)
13. this would be a palestinian suicide note
The US could never officially vote in favour or recognize a non negotiated state. The political backlash would be to great for any party or president. If the US announces they will not support it then almost certainly the EU would vote against because the US is stil the only voice that really matters and they know anything not agreed on with Israel will fail. Assuming the UN voted in favour what then? As there has been no agreement with Israel then it would almost certainly result in an all out war which will make Cast Lead look like a small skirmish. If there is a war the US even with Obama running things will have to take Israels side and they will say that if they want help calling off Israel which has a right to self defense then the condition is they sit down & negotiate borders with Israel Once they have a state they are no longer refugees so that means winding up UNRWA which gives them millions every year and fiances the construction of schools, hospitals and many other thing as well as providing food aid. Many countries will use it as an excuse to stop donating as much to the palestinians as they have a state now, they have their own economic problems without paying to build an arab state. Israel will cancel all palestinian work permits so less jobs. Israel will seal its borders and the palestinians rely on access to Israel for trade. What happens if Israel cuts off the electricity it supplies it will take years of peace to build infastructure to hand that responsibility to an arab state or build power stations of their own. The palestinians have no united political leadership and as the existence of this state is not based on negotiation then there are no international guidelines regarding policy to Israel. So Fatah may or may not be willing to say we got a state now lets quit while we are ahead Hamas may say we never agreed to 67 lines only and our policy is we go for the rest of Palestine your either with us or against us politically. If they are so divided they may end up fighting a civil war to decide what direction this state will take. If the palestinians rush this then they risk destroying everything they have. The policy from day 1 should not have been deadline based it should have been we negotiate as long as it takes. If Clinton though had said thats how I want it to be instead of working on oslo we would probably have made more progress because the mentality of both side would be we are looking for peace primarily a state is a prize earned by the palestinians if we get peace. There would be ups & downs but over time trust would build & both sides would have compromised on certain issues. If they try rushing into the UN now though its all over.

14. The first war...
The Palestinian state will fight will be against Iran, through Hamas. We have all seen how it turned out last time in Gaza.Erakat is clearing the way to create another state for Hamas to take over. Hamas is waiting only for the IDF to leave the West Bank. We should take the upper hand on all sides. Deal with Hamas to bring Gilad back, then expect nothing but calm from Gaza. Get the Americans to bomb Iranians nuclear sides and remind Abbas and his donkeys who won the war back in 1967. Since when the looser can make demands?

17. Declaring Statehood is the Only Hope for Peace
The PA should declare statehood based upon the framework of UNSCR 242 and other applicable UN resolutions and international laws. By doing so it would force Israel to expose its true intentions and open the door for international troops to facilitate the withdrawal of Israel occupation forces and settlers. I'm not sure the EU or USA would oppose such a move given Israel's refusal to abide by its road map obligations as long as the Palestinian's agreed to renounce violence, recognize Israel's right to exist behind its pre-1967 borders and allow Israeli settlers who have not been involved in acts of violence towards or incitement of hatred towards Palestinian to remain if they choose to become Palestinian citizens, while the matter of compensating the refugees denied their right of return could by Israel could easily be handled in the courts. The US already does not recognize the legitimacy of Israeli settlements or its claim to East Jerusalem, so statehood would solve the matter quickly and improve US ties with the Arab world tremendously.

19. #5 - To Moderate Jew - part of occupation of America
In the interest of fairness and being moderate, I think you should agree to permitting the American Indians to reclaim all of the territory taken from them by the So called Americans who now occupy north America. After all you did this to the Indians who actually had the right to live there by force, slaughter, and genocide, then rounded up the few survivors into reservations. Why does a difference of another 60 to 100 years of history prior to the reestablishment of Israel by it's rightful inhabitants give you the right to forget about the slaughter of an entire people so you could take their land? An you want to speak to us about being moderate? We were in Israel 2,500 years before the first Arab ever followed Mohammad, or tried to claim the temple mount as an Arab Holy site. You should be expelled from America your holdings given to the Indians and you sent back to Minsk or Warsaw.

20. Most people focus on the UN, the PA, and their friends..
But we find it harder to focus on the real culprit: a weak Israeli government. From the moment Mr Netanyahu agreed to the creation of a Palestinian state, then your enemies knew that the road was clear for them. There would be no objections. No need for more endless peace talks or Arab concessions. What for? When the PA has so many supporters everywhere, and a very weak Israeli government that won't lift a finger if they decided to declare independence? Israelis must focus all their energies ON THEIR OWN GOVERNMENT and demand immediate annexation of the territories. International law supports Israel's sovereignty over all the heartland. Doesn't the government have its own legal department to advise them? What exactly have they been doing all these years? That same group may launch a class action suit against the US for supporting the creation of an Arab state on what is legitimately Jewish land.
Marcella   (11.14.09)
21. Someone tell Hamas
This is an attempt to use more bluster, this time more words from the UN to substitute for Palestinians having functioning democratic institutions. You can't do it on words alone. They have been misled since Arafat and they believe that some guy standing on a platform yelling and brandishing a gun is a nation. They are wrong.

24. Sarah B & Hague conventions
Sarah, I won't even dignify your snide comments implying that I am a self hater and a hater of Israel with even the slightest reply. As for my education it is almost as much as yours so don't try to second guess what you don't know. You insinuate that I do not know how to use the internet. Well, my dear, I logged on to the Avalon Project before you placed their URLs in your reply. I found in the Avalon Project and in other web sites dealing with the Hague Conventions not one word implying directly or indirectly that Israel has a right to keep the territories forever or to move its citizens into those territories. Were that so I am certain that every Israeli government and most of our Congress, especially Joe Lieberman, would have repeated that canard over and over again. What I have read on the Avalon Project website in Sec. 3, Art. 46 is that the occupying forces cannot confiscate private property nor can they pillage. Israel has violated both of those articles as well as Article 50 which forbids collective punishment of the population. Why do you think, oh learned Sarah, that no Israeli government speaks about these Hague conventions if what you say is accurate? Probably because there is nothing in them that says that Israel has the right to keep the land in perpetuity and to move in its people. As I assume you also know, the vast majority of the world's nations, including friends of Israel, do not recognize Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem. Why do you think that only two countries, El Salvador & Costa Rica, house their embassies in Jerusalem rather than in Tel Aviv? Were Hague Conventions to be as you interpret them, every country would have their embassy in Jerusalem. But I guess that the rest of the world does not have your judicial expertise or knowledge. Finally, I wonder where you ever got the idea that the U.S. did not declare war on Germany? After Germany declared war on the U.S. , the Congress, on December 11, 1941, recognized that a state of war existed between the U.S. and Germany and declared war on Germany. Read it here. http://avalon.law.yale.edu/wwii/dec04.asp#germany http://usa.usembassy.de/etexts/ga3-411211.htm This was the last time that the U.S. Congress has ever followed its Constitutional duty and declared war even though we have been involved in one war after another since the end of World War 2.

27. "...they turned down three offers..." for a state, see # 12
Actually, the Arabs of Ereretz Israel (Land of Israel / Palestine) have could have had a state based on: 1. The proposal of the Peel Commission of 1937. 2. The decision of the UN of 1947. 3. Their insistence of setting up one in the now disputed territories between the years 1948 and 1967 when these areas were under total Arab rule and "cleansed" of all their Jewish residents. 4. The proposal of Begin and Saadat for an autonomy that in time could have turned into a state, 1978. 5. The Clinton and Barak offer of 2000. 6. The Jew-free Gaza Strip that could have been a step towards an independent state, 2005. 7 The Olmert offer to Mahmoud Abbas of 2008. They rejected them all, usually accompanying their rejection with violence and terror. The reason: any such proposal would require them to exist alongside the independent Jewish state of Israel in whose right to be, to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people they don't accept, have never accepted and it appears will never do so in the future. Let us hope the world out there begins to appreciate the fact that in Arabic "occupation" that must end means the entire landmass between the River and the Sea.
