The officials say the new equipment would help stop the smuggling in the area, which has been the main entrance for weapons and explosives used by the Palestinian militant group Hamas against Israel.

Inside the Rafah terminal on Sunday, four army trucks loaded with wooden crates and drills could be seen accompanied by four US Army engineers.

The Egyptian officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity the subject.

Israel has repeatedly called on Egypt to do more to end the smuggling.

On Saturday security sources said Egypt had begun installing cameras and motion sensors along its border with Gaza to try to combat the arms smuggling to the Hamas-run territory.

The sources said Egyptian authorities had begun installing the equipment two days ago with joint US, French and German expertise, and added that they hoped the sensors and cameras would help detect any tunnel construction in the border area.
