The police decided Thursday to close the Cremieux case pending against outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert,
citing lack of evidence.
The case focused on the suspicion that Olmert bought an apartment on Jerusalem's Cremieux Street for a significantly reduced price during his tenure as industry, trade and labor minister, in a bid to speed up sales on the real estate project.
National Fraud Unit investigators presented their findings to Commander Yoav Segalovich, head of the police's intelligence and investigations unit, who sanctioned the decision to close the case. The findings will now be turned over to the Attorney General's Office.
Amir Dan, the prime minister's communications director said in response that "it was clear from day one that this case was based on nothing. One must wonder why it took three years to investigate such a simple case, just to conclude the obvious."
