ראשית, כפי שכבר נרמז בכתבה אין חדש תחת השמש. כבר לפני 7 שנים תוכנות כמו PointCast, עשו דברים כאלו, ואפילו חברה ישראךית בשם BackWeb הוקמה למטרה זו (בינתיים המודל העיסקי שונה). בתכל'ס אתה לא ממש צריך את זה. אם אתה מעוניין בסיכומי חדשות טובים על נושאים מסויימים לך על Google Alerts ואז פעם ביום אתה מעודכן. אם אתה מרגיש צורך לדעת כל דבר ברגע שהוא מתפרסם אז RSS יהיה מצויין בשבילך. אבל הזהר, קל להגיע לעודף מידע ומשם הדרךהיא קצרה לבחילת עודף מידע והקאה.

There's a Boom in Push Software By Joe Kilshiemer of The Sentinel Staff The cyberspace moguls who want to make money off the Internet are tired of waiting for you to visit their sites. So rather than trying to pull you in, they're going to push their sites at you. That's provided, of course, that you download the new "push technology" software, one of the Internet's hottest developments in recent months. Push-technology software is a way to let you personalize cyberspace. The programs let you subscribe to your favorite sites or Internet channels and then automatically fetch information from them for you. That way, for example, your computer can go out and get each morning's weather forecast while you're getting ready for the day. Or find sports scores or locate ski reports or whatever. The list of available information is pretty long. The first - and so far, most famous - push-technology software is Pointcast, which presents the information in the form of a screensaver that turns on after your computer has been idle for a few minutes. Another push-technology company is Marimba, whose Castanet software will automatically update Java-based programs called applets. I wrote about Pointcast in this column in April and about Marimba in October, and I used both sets of software for a few months. I wound up deleting both from my hard drive because they slowed my computer too mush while they ran in the backround. Nevertheless, Pointcast and Marimba have made the online industry stand up and take notice because their programs have been downloaded by millions of Internet users. Anyone quick on the uptake could discern that push-technology not only lets companies send information to those millions of users but advertisements too. This is why you're about to see a rash of companies pushing their new push-technology software. Every site that has an interest in pushing content your way will offer you a convenient little link where you can download the software. One of the first to the market is BackWeb, which made its debut last month at the Comdex computer show in Las Vegas. BackWeb has gotten a lot of attention because it promises not to hog a lot of your computer's resources while it's working in the background. That's a definite plus. BackWeb delivers its information in a variety of ways: as text messages or small screensavers or as "info-flashes," which are small banner ads that pop up on you screen. To get Back Web, start at the company's home page. Address: http://www. backweb.com Once you download and install the software, you then are asked to subscribe to the channels from which you want to receive information. BackWeb has an impressive selection. My favorites are ZDNet, a service from computer-magazine -publisher Ziff-Davis Communications; Virtual Vineyard, which has a wine-expert column titled "The Cork Dork;" and WGBH, Boston's public-television station. WGBH sent me a cute little screensaver of Arthur, a cartoon aardvark who stars in a new kids show on PBS. Another intriguing possibility among BackWeb's channels is called American Singles. At the site, I was asked to register my name, age, likes and dislikes. The site promises to match me up with people who share my interests and automatically send notices through the Back Web software. Woo-hoo. Online romane delivered right to my computer. As far as I can tell. BackWeb delivers on its promise of not slowing down your computer while it's working in the background. The one feature that I found annoying - banner ads that popped up on my screen while I was working on something else - can be turned off in the program's Preferences menu. ... בקצרה ביותר (כי הכתבה ממש מזיינת בשכל ומי שלא הבין מה זה בכלל RSS בטח לא הבין ממנה כלום). RSS זו דרך לראות רשימה של עדכונים חדשים באתרים אהובים עליכם. למשל - אם תוסיפו את ערוץ המחשבים של YNET, תראו רשימה של כל הכתבות החדשות שעוד לא קראתם. למי זה טוב? למי שמשועמם, למי שקורא בלוגים או ערוצים קבועים ולא בא לו לבדוק מה חדש כל הזמן, למי שאוהב להיות בעיניינים ולמי שאוהב לבדוק פיצ'רים חדשים. ניסיתי, בדקתי, הפסקתי

מודה שגם אני לא ממש ידעתי מה זה למרות היותי איש טכנולוגי שמנסה להישאר מעודכן. הכתבה אכן טכנית מדי וממש לא ברורה לטכנופוב המצוי. התגובות לכתבה מעידות על טכנופוביה קשה ואולי בצדק. אנשים רוצים להיות מעודכנים ולהתקדם אבל לא במחיר הפיכתם לגאוני מחשב...

תוכנת דואר מעולה וגם קורא RSS נוח.

כלומר להתפטר מהמציאה, האם יש דרך לעשות את זה? ואיך? אגב נזכרתי בסיפור ישן על איש אחד שמכר לאיש אחר ב- 100 שקלים מכשיר שעושה הכל! וגם הסביר לו איך להפעיל את המכשיר. הקונה הפעיל את המכשיר וביקש את המאכל האהוב עליו - פרושוטו עגל חלב. המכשיר אכן ייצר פרושוטו ולא חדל ומילא את כל ביתו וחצרו של הקונה בפרושוטו עגל חלב משובח. אז רץ הקונה חזרה למוכר, ושילם 100,000 ש"ח טבין ותקילין כדי שהלה יסביר לו איך מפסיקים את המכשיר... ולהשומע ינעם :)

תוכנה ממש נחמדה שנתקלתי בה נקראת "מרכז המידע". היא מאפשרת לקרוא RSS וגם לקבל עדכונים מאתרים רגילים אפילו שאין להם RSS, ממש מגניב. לינק: www.korss.co.il
