Peres has special gift for Obama

President to present document recognizing State of Israel to Obama during US visit

A necklace for Michelle and moving documents dating back to the establishment of the Jewish State for Barack, these are the gifts President Shimon Peres will be taking with him to the US when he sets out Saturday night to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from the American president.

 

Peres will present the gifts at a celebratory dinner to be held in his honor by the US president and first lady. Among the documents set to be presented are those that bear witness to President Harry Truman's recognition of the State of Israel.

The documents, which have been kept in the State Archives and the Weizmann Archives, include a personal letter sent by the State of Israel's first president to Truman in which he asks Truman to recognize the new state.

Truman recognizes State of Israel's provisional government

 

The documents recognizing the provisional government of Israel signed by President Truman, as well as a thank you letter from then Prime Minister Ben-Gurion to the president, have also been included in the gift.

 

In addition to the documents, the gift will also include commemorative coins issued by the Israel Coins and Medals Corporation in honor of the city of Jerusalem.

 

The first lady will not leave empty handed either; she will be receiving a necklace made especially for her by Israelis with special needs. It was prepared using materials made in Israel and includes a Jaffa rope interwoven with gold thread, Turquoise stones from Eilat, and gold ornaments.
