PA to defer September UN bid

Ramallah decided to delay its motion for status upgrade in the United Nations pending results of US presidential elections

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki said Thursday that the Palestinian Authority has decided not to file for a UN status upgrade during the UN General Assembly's September meeting.

 

Al-Malki said that the bid will be submitted at a later date, one that may guarantee a more favorable result for the Palestinians.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to speak at the General Assembly, and officially announce when the PA will be officially submitting its bid.

 

Abbas is expected to task the Palestinian envoy to the UN with negotiating the best time with the UN Secretary-General's Office.

 

Analysts said that the Palestinian decision was most likely the result of international pressure to defer the move pending the results of the US presidential race In November.
