Israeli films compete in European Film Academy Awards
Two Israeli films and one other Hebrew-language film contend in European Film Academy Awards alongside new films from well-known European filmmakers
The European Film Academy revealed the 48 films on the list of candidates for 2009 European film competition. This year, films from 25 different countries, including Israel, are represented on the list.
The Israeli films that made the list are Eitan Green's "Hakol Mathil Bayam (It All Starts at Sea)" that was jointly produced by Eilon Ratzkovsky, Yossi Uzrad, Yochanan Kredo, and Koby Gal-Raday, and Keren Yadaya's "Kalat Hayam (Jaffa)", an Israeli-French-German co-production based on a screenplay written by Yadaya and Illa Ben-Porat.

Another Hebrew-language film is among the contenders for the European prize. "Brothers" is a Swiss film directed by Igaal Nidaam, based on a screenplay written by Nidaam, David Belhassen, and Roy Katsiri.
Palestinian representation also made the cut this year, with Nazareth native Elia Suleiman's "The Time that Remains" that was jointly produced by France's Michael Gentile and Suleiman.
The Israeli and Palestinian films will contend in an impressive list of cinematic pieces made by some of the best current filmmakers. Also on the list are: Pedro Almodóvar's "Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces)", Lars von Trier's "Antichrist", Anne Fontaine's "Coco avant Chanel (Coco before Chanel)", Andrea Arnold's "Fish Tank", Ken Loach's "Looking for Eric", "Un Prophete (A Prophet)", Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire", Andrzej Wajda's "Tatarak (Sweet Rush)", Marco Bellocchio's "Vincere", Philippe Lioret's "Welcome", and Michael Haneke's "Das Weisse Band (The White Ribbon)".
The Scandinavian countries have an admirable showing on this year's list with the following films: Henrik Ruben Genz's "Frygtelig Lykkelig (Terribly Happy)", Aku Louhimies "Kasky (Tears of April)", Tomas Alfredson's "Lat Dem Ratte Komma In (Let the Right One In)", Annette K. Olesen "Lille Soldat", Niels Arden Oplev's "Man Som Hatar Kvinnor (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo)", Jan Troell's "Maria Larssons Eviga Ogonblick (Everlasting Moments)", Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning's "Max Manus", and Rune Denstad Langlo "Nord (North)".
In the coming weeks, the academy members will each vote individually for the candidates competing in the various categories. The list of candidates by category will be announced on November 7 at the European Film Festival, which will be held this year in Seville, Spain. The awards ceremony at which the winners will be announced will be held in Germany on December 12.
The European Film Academy was founded in 1988 with the goal of promoting European cinematic culture. Israel became eligible to compete in the competition just four years ago. The first Israelis to win a title in the competition were crowned in 2007 with Sasson Gabbai, who won European Actor in the film "Bikur Hatizmoret (The Band's Visit), produced by Eran Kolirin, who pulled in the prize for European Discovery the same year.
Last year, Max Richter won European Composer for his original works for Ari Pulman's "Waltz with Bashir".
